What Is the Gokyo Ri Trek?

Gokyo Ri Trek is a high-altitude trek in the Everest region of Nepal offering the opportunity to reach the peak of Gokyo Ri, one of the best viewpoints in the Himalayas.

This route offers an alternative to the more popular route to Everest Base Camp, taking a route northwest through the Gokyo Valley and its stunning glacial lakes, Sherpa villages, dramatic scenery, and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier.

Gokyo Ri stands 5,357m tall and can be viewed from all directions with views of four of the world's highest peaks:

  • Mount Everest (8,848.86 m)
  • Lhotse (8,516 m)
  • Makalu (8,485 m)
  • Cho Oyu (8,188 m)

For those who love to capture the Himalayan sunrise, the summit is a popular spot on a clear morning.

The Gokyo Ri Trek is not like a lot of other treks in which you just see nature and do not interact with the local culture.

Pass through Sherpa villages and see the welcoming communities, centuries-old monasteries, and understand traditions that have been passed down through the generations in the Khumbu region.

Many trekkers also combine this route with the Gokyo Valley Renjo La Pass Trek or the EBC Gokyo Chola Pass Trek for a longer adventure that explores additional high mountain passes and Everest viewpoints.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the most favored seasons to trek. This is the perfect time to do the Gokyo Ri Trek when the rhododendron forests bloom, the temperature is warm, and the weather is great for hiking the mountains.

Autumn (September to November)

The autumn season brings crisp air, stable weather, and clear Himalayan vistas following the monsoon season. It is a generally accepted best time for photography and high-altitude trekking.

Read Best Time to Trek in Nepal for more information on the country's trekking conditions in each season.

Winter (December to February)

Trails are quieter, and you'll find some fantastic snow scenes in the winter. Temperatures can, however, fall well below freezing, especially at higher elevations.

Monsoon (June to August)

Monsoon is the least favored trekking season, and the weather is extremely wet, rugged, and visibility is poor in the mountains. Weather may also cause delays on flights to Lukla.

Gokyo Ri Trek Difficulty

Overall, the Gokyo Ri Trek is a moderately difficult trek. Although there is no technical climbing to be done, the long walking days and high elevation expose the need for good fitness and careful acclimatization.

Factors that affect the difficulty level

High altitude

The highest altitude on the trek is 5,357 m / 17,575 ft, where the oxygen content of the atmosphere is considerably lower than at sea level. Acclimatization is crucial on the approach to Gokyo Ri, the summit.

Daily walking hours

Most days trekked involved 5-7 hours of walking each day, with summit day seeing the team attempt to reach Gokyo Ri, a steep climb after an early start.

The trail conditions

Trail conditions include boulder moraine, rocky paths, suspension bridges, and occasionally steep ascents, to name a few. No technical experience or equipment is needed for the climb, only sturdy boots and trekking poles are highly recommended.

Physical fitness

Trekkers will need to be reasonably fit as they will be on their feet for five to seven consecutive days carrying only a light daypack. Cardio exercise along with endurance training before travel should really help with the climb.

If you're looking to compare this trek with a more challenging Everest Base Camp trek, I suggest you read Everest Base Camp trek difficulty.
