The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most popular and beautiful treks in the world, located in the Khumbu region of Nepal. The trek typically takes about 12-14 days to complete and involves walking through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world, including the Sagarmatha National Park and the Khumbu Glacier. Trekking with reputable local Sherpa guide and porter will make your trek more manageable, safe and enjoyable.

The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small town in the Khumbu region. From there, trekkers follow a trail that winds through beautiful villages, forests, and pastures, passing through famous places such as Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Pheriche, and Gorak Shep. Along the way, trekkers will encounter breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountain range, including Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. Overall, the EBC trek is considered a hard but rewarding experience that provides breathtaking views of the Himalayas and an opportunity to explore the culture and traditions of the Sherpa people. The best time to go for this trek is from March to May or from September to November when the weather is mild, and the views are crystal clear. The trek requires a good level of physical fitness, and trekkers should be prepared for long days of walking and changes in weather conditions.

Today, We take an early morning adventurous flight to Lukla. This air route is one of the most beautiful routes in the entire world filled with the highest peaks and incredible green forests. It takes around 30 minutes to reach Lukla by flight from Kathmandu.

Upon arrival at Lukla, you meet the other trekking members, and after some sorting and packing, and arrangements, you will start your trek through the pretty wealthy village of Lukla until you reach Phakding.

To assist in acclimatization, we only have a short hike today. However, if you are interested in additional activities, we can take a side trip to a nearby monastery. This is our first Overnight in Phakding. Best Lodge accommodation

We will be walking through a beautiful pine forest, and the track leads us along the Dudh Koshi River through many suspension bridges, one of which is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge.

First, we catch superb scenes of the glistening Mt. Thamserku (6618m). Through the settlement of Benkar, Chumoa, Monjo, we come to the check post and entrance to Sagarmatha National Park.

We pass through the last village of Jorsale before reaching Namche Bazaar. The trail climbs through the forests and bridges until we reach the confluence of the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers.

After a final steep ascent of about two hours, we get first sight of Mt. Everest peering over the Lhotse-Nuptse ridge. At this juncture, we stop at Chautara to admire the views. We still need to hike for about 1.5 hours to reach Namche Bazaar, a gateway to Mt. Everest and the main trading center of this region. Overnight in Namche [Las Vegas of the Khumbu] –

Namche Bazaar is situated between two ridges amidst the enormous peaks of the Khumbu and has a variety of lodges, teashops, and souvenir shops as well. Its sophisticated position seems to be developed enough to meet western standards, even at remote mountain outposts like this. The enterprising Sherpa folks hereabouts have learned a lot from the big expeditions that have passed this way. Said to be the ‘Las Vegas of the Khumbu, Namche is just the place to spend a rest day, acclimatizing to the new altitude before setting off towards Tengboche.

After breakfast, our Sherpa guide will take you on an acclimatization hike up the slopes above the Everest views hotel. Constructed by the Japanese this stunningly located hotel with delightful views of Everest and Ama Dablam is a perfect place for a tea break. Continuing, we will also walk to the towns of Kunde and Khumjung set below Khumbila, the rocky peak sacred to all Sherpas.

In Kunde, we will visit the Edmund Hillary hospital, and if the time permits, we will also visit the monastery in Khumjung, where we can witness the only Yeti skull in the world paying a small amount of fee. Afterward, we will return to the lodge for a tea break during the afternoon at leisure, after which you may choose to explore the town. Enjoy a second cozy night at the Sherpa Lodge, with an evening briefing by your guide covering any necessary gear and the anticipated itinerary for the following days.

After enjoying our breakfast in Namche, today we hit the trail towards Tengboche enjoying superb views of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and close-up views of Thamserku.

Our trek follows the gradual trail with some ups and downs overlooking magnificent views of the high Himalayas. Along the way, we can spot wild fauna like pheasant, musk deer, or a herd of Himalayan Thar. The trail goes gradually down up to Kayangjuma. The path eventually reaches Sanasa, which is the major trail junction to Gokyo valley and Everest Base Camp.

The track then follows through the pine forests, and after we cross the prayer flags festooned bridge over Dudh Koshi River, we reach Phunki Thenga, a small settlement with a couple of teahouses and a small army post amidst the alpine woods.

After having a relaxed lunch at Phunki Thenga, we then have a little tough climb steeply up through the pine forest before we reach Tengboche(3,870m/12,694ft). Tengboche is a great place for close-up views of Ama-Dablam, Nuptse, and Everest, and the biggest Buddhist Monastery in the Khumbu region is found here.

A real early start is required to reach the Everest Base Camp. It takes several hours as the trail weaves its way through ice pinnacles and past the crevasses of the Khumbu Glacier.

After a brief lunch and rest at Gorakshep, we take the path to Everest Base Camp through the once vast Gorakshep Lake. Continuing straight ahead, we come through the Indian army mountaineers' memorials. Only upon reaching the Everest Base Camp do we appreciate the Everest climbers who brave the dangerous route through the Khumbu icefall.

Mountaineer's tents stand out in bright colors against the monotony of gray surroundings (especially in the spring). Nuptse, Khumbuste, and Pumori are the mountains we can view from the base camp. On the return leg, we can take a higher route to get a grand view of the Khumbu icefall and the way to the South Col. We return to Gorakshep for a restful night.

Today is the most crucial part of our trip. We start early at dawn to catch the dramatic views from Kala Patthar witnessing the first light of day shining on Mt. Everest. However, we need to get prepared for an early morning, dark and cold temperature (-10 to -14 C) departure beforehand. Plus there is always the potential for chilling cold winds, which are quite common. Familiar peaks such as Lingtren, Khumbutse, and Changtse tower to the east even as Everest begins to expose itself emerging between the west shoulder crest and Nuptse.

During the ascent to Kala Patthar, we can pause to catch our breath at several outstanding viewpoints to click pictures. After several hours of rising, we reach Kalapatthar. From here, we scuttle to climb the rocky outcrop near to the summit marked by Cairns and prayer flags. As we reach the top, we sit on the Kalapatthar rocks, and our eyes take in the unbelievable Himalayan views, wandering from one mighty massif to another.

We take as many pictures as we possibly can with our camera so they can last a lifetime. After this we make our way back to Pheriche with a slow descent; for a good night’s rest, which we truly deserve. Overnight at a local lodge after a great day.

Today, we begin to get warmed up by the light cool breeze. Although we are traveling the same route down, we enjoy entirely different views. We snap a mixture of open plains, rhododendron, and pine forests, and in the distance snow-covered peaks.

We take time and walk at our own pace today as this is the last day of our trek. We experience the Sherpa villages' profound faith in Buddhism and the culture of prayer stones and prayer flags while we walk through the villages.

Upon arrival in Lukla, we have plenty of time to relax, stretch those aching legs, and recall the experiences of the last couple of days. We experience the culmination of a fantastic trek on a happy note with everyone back safe and sound with smiling faces! Upon arrival in Lukla, we stroll around while our leader will re-confirm our flight ticket. In the evening, we enjoy the last dinner with our crew and make it a party night, which calls for a celebration.

One of the most amazing experiences I have ever had! We did the epic Everest Base camp trek with our Sherpa guides Migma and Dawa. Migma and Dawa made this trek exceptional. Everything was superb well organized. Despite it being a hard trek, the Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions ensures it will be an amazing experience. From the hotel in Kathmandu city to food and lodging on the mountain, to the hike itself-nothing could have been any better.
What an incredible way to spend time in Nepal. We had so many laughs and our whole group was so helpful to one another that I could not recommend Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions enough.
The trek preparation and design of the trip were super fast and impressive- the itinerary was impeccably designed- with all-inclusive packages. Mr. Pasang Sherpa was very personalized and he always made time to discuss these issues and questions (pressing or not) by Whatsapp or email.

Moreover, it is a locally owned Sherpa Company and supports the community. The porters who seem to have the best gear compared to other companies also carry this pride. No need to look any further for an amazing journey to the Everest base camp trek.

Would you recommend Mountain Sherpa Trekking to your friends?

What would you advice other travellers?

We trekked to Everest Base Camp with 3 of my friends in a group of 12 people. The trekking journey is definitely the best experience I ever had in my life. The friendly and cooperative staffs of the trekking company were quite experienced and helped and guided us during our entire trekking journey.

Having always lived a comfortable life, the accommodation at tea houses in the mountain felt somewhat difficult but it was the part of the adventure. We are very thankful to the Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions and their staffs who helped us enjoy the breath-taking mountain views and teaching us the local Nepali culture which made our journey much more memorable.

I and my girlfriend booked our Everest Base Camp Trek with Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expedition. We successfully completed our trek without any difficulties or injury. We are happy that we chose the MSTE Company for our trekking journey. We are extremely happy and satisfied with the services provided to us. The trekking guide and porters were very friendly and took care of us all the time on the trail. Though it was our first trip to Nepal the friendliness and helpful nature of our guide didn’t let us feel being at an unknown place.

We enjoyed every moment of our trekking journey. Furthermore, we were provided with some trekking gears like a sleeping bag, down jacket, and a duffel bag without any extra charge for trekking. Our guide helped us with everything during our trek keeping our safety at priority. We are very happy with the services and guidance provided to us. They really were beyond our expectations. We recommend everyone to book their trekking journey in Nepal with this wonderful company. Believe me, they are the best companion to the Everet Base Camp Trek.

My wife and I completed the Everest base amp trek with group join trek, and we were all so thankful we chosen to go with mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions! They exceeded our expectations in every way. It is a very prearranged, expert company. They were helpful, replied all our inquiries thoroughly and fast. During the Everest base camp trek, our expert local Sherpa guides were fantastic.

They were welcoming, experienced, and patient. Despite us often being near the back of A day before the start of the trek there is a briefing at the hotel, which is a good way to get to know about overall trekking. Also we got the company duffle bags for the stuff, which was carried, by the porters.

The first day began early morning with the pick up at our hotel and drive to Airport for Lukla Flight. After short but thrilling flight to Lukla, We met our Sherpa guides and Porters to start of the Everest base camp trek. Before the start there was a nice coffee and breakfast. On the trek itself we experienced that the guides took care of everyone of the group. They did a lot of stops, so you get a chance to take some rest and drink or eat something. Our guides never pushed us to speed up. They were outstanding in providing fascinating info about the places. The porters were amazing! The lodge accommodations and food was overall very good.

Overall, Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions is outstanding value, and we recommend them to everyone!

All before the trek was set up so perfectly and efficiently, and they created such a warm and fun environment during the trek, it felt like we were a small family by the end of the trek.

We met as a group for an information session the night before we fly to Lukla. This was helpful and informative, and it allowed us to meet our group over tea too. The first day of the trek, we started off at the Everest base camp trek from Lukla after short flight from Kathmandu. The trek we took was absolutely beautiful. The views are unlike I have ever seen and I will never forget the beauty of the mountains and the terrain. No one in the group was rushed to finish the trek and our guides gave us spots to take breaks and wait for everyone before continuing. Overall, the trek was also gorgeous, and was mostly downhill.

We also had time throughout the trek to learn more about the Sherpa culture and lives of the local Sherpa people - this, after the insane views - is another reason you should definitely do the Everest base camp trek.

Last but not least, I want to commend our expert local Sherpa guides, Rinji Sherpa and Sonam Sherpa, and the rest of the Mountain Sherpa trekking & Expeditions crew that was on our trek. They are the main reasons that this was such a great experience. Rinji and Sonam knew so much information about the region, Sherpa culture, and history, and they spent a good portion of the trek teaching us new things. Beyond this, they took our care and safety as a priority. When I was feeling sick the first day,

Sonam stayed behind to confirm I was feeling better and to continue at my own pace. I made it to camp that night because of the patience and care of both of the guides! Last but not least, the food was incredible on the trek. The porters and the lodge and food was good - it was really amazing to see them carry all of our bags and the necessary equipment ahead of us. Thank you Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions for making my trip so memorable

“After spending 15 days in Everest Base Camp Trek, I have to congratulate Pasang and the team of Mountain Sherpa Trekking for their services.

I was a solo traveler but Pasang took care of me in Kathmandu picking me up on my arrival, helping me with all the arrangements (change money, rent equipment) and taking care of me after my trip once I had to come back to the airport. Great Service!
Best of best was my climbing sherpa/guide in Nepal (Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa). I totally recommend Lhakpa as a guide. Not only he is always focused on the wellness of his client, he knows everybody and everything in the region so he is always happy to share his experiences and advice the best for the trip.

I recommend this trip to anyone, it is a fantastic adventure and if organized by right people (like Mountain Sherpa Trekking) it is not as difficult as it looks even for those traveling alone”.

We did some looking around before deciding on going to base camp with Mountain Sherpa, and we are glad we did. We decided on them because of the price, communication and the fact that they are local - so our money wasn't going to the bottom line of a big company and we got the personal touch we were looking for. Our trip was customised to suit the flight dates that we had already booked in advance, and Sumba managed everything for us, including changing Lukla flight dates a couple of times to give us some more like in Kathmandu before our trek and having the amend bookings as one of our party got sick before we left Australia and had to drop out.

Communication with Sumba was always prompt and effective but still relaxed and friendly. The guides and porters that Sumba organised for us (Lhakpa, Pemba and Nyima) were fantastic: knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and good humoured. 1 of us was struggling with altitude sickness and they were all concerned and looked after him really well. We got up to base camp and back in 2 less days than expected (we came down pretty quickly) and it wasn't an issue to bring our flights back to Kathmandu forward and organise an extra couple of days accom in Kathmandu as well.
Overall an excellent trip - and I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Mountain Sherpa to anyone looking to explore the Himalaya.

Amazing Trek to Base Camp

The Mountain Sherpa Trekking team did an amazing and professional job from day one until it was time to go home. My fiancée and I took the trip in late March and enjoyed bright sunshine and warm temperatures on most days. At no fault of the trekking company, poor weather did delay our flight from Kathmandu to Lukla for 2 days, which forced us take a helicopter or risk missing our return flights home. This added to the cost, but our guide in Kathmandu, Tandi and our guide on the trail, Nurujngbu were very accommodating to ensure we got the most out of the trip. Every day we were treated to new and beautiful views of the Himalayan Mountains and the chance to learn and interact with the local population. Every night were were treated to wonderful food and our own very nice (however cold) room for 2. On the days when the road got steep and the air got thin, Nurujngbu and our porter, Pimba always made every effort to help us along with helpful tips and a positive attitude. Overall, the trip was a huge success and one I would highly recommend to all family and friends.

Thanks for all your hard work organizing our trekking adventure. We had a wonderful time. The trek to Everest Base Camp was not easy, but was rewarding and worth it with awesome views, interesting cultures, and kind peple. We never felt unsafe throughout our trip for any political reasons. Our guide Pasang and Nima were great. Nima always had a warm smile. During one night my wife became very sick with a stomach bug probably due to the food. Pasang, Nima, and another Sherpa carried her on their backs to the next town that had a doctor. This showed how kind and caring the Sherpa culture was. Overall, I would definitely recommend this trip and your company for excellent trekking service in Nepal.

Drinking Water during Everest base camp Trek:

When planning a high-altitude trek, it's important to consider the impact of our choices on the local environment. While it may seem like a convenient and safe option, mineral water can actually have a devastating impact on mountain societies.

While it's true that purchasing mineral water provides income for local traders, it also creates a significant amount of waste and pollution. Most mountain communities simply do not have the resources to properly dispose of plastic bottles, which can take more than 450 years to decompose. Burning these bottles releases toxic gases into the air, while leaving them in piles can lead to unsightly and hazardous waste buildup.

For example, on a 13-day trek to Everest Base Camp, the recommended water intake for each person is 3-4 liters per day. This amounts to more than 40 liters of water and 40 plastic bottles per person, which will not decompose until the year 2466. For a group of 12 people, this results in over 480 plastic bottles that will be left behind in the mountains forever.

So what can we do to minimize our impact? Consider bringing a refillable water bottle and purifying water from natural sources using a filtration system or water purification tablets. This not only reduces waste but also supports the local community by reducing the demand for mineral water. Additionally, many lodges along popular trekking routes now offer purified water refills for a small fee.

By making small changes in our choices, we can help protect the delicate mountain environment and support sustainable tourism. Let's make a conscious effort to leave the mountains as we found them, or even better.

The Alternatives: The great news is that there are really various options that will help you out of the bottled water trap. Here are just four of the best. All you have to do is pick which one is right for you.

Striped- Steripen is the most trusted model on the market. This technique uses exactly the same process as most mineral water undergoes before it is bottled. It’s UV filtering, exactly the same treatment as the majority of bottled water undergoes to be purified, but on the go. The technology has been around for much longer than you think, but it’s only recently been competitively priced enough to be on the market. SteriPen is an American company; other UV filters are also available.

Boiled water– This isn’t always an option if you’re out and about, but boiled water is an excellent option for safe drinking water on the trek. Boiling the water kills any nastiness lurking there. It is the safest and most convenient option. Most lodges serve it, and it is great to ward off the cold. Prices range anywhere between NPR 50 and 120 per liter. This means the cost of drinking water will be around $40-$60 for an 11-day EBC trek.

Purification tablets– Water-refining tablets or chemicals like chlorine dioxide are frequently used. They are easy to carry and cheap to buy. However, they are not as effective as UV filters or boiled water and need a few hours to act. Besides these, LifeStraw and iodine-based treatments are also available but have their drawbacks.

Twin Otter aircraft is the usual mode of transport to and from Lukla. This service is fairly dependable, however in case the flights are canceled due to mountain weather conditions, Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expeditions will charter a helicopter to ensure you are on schedule for your international flight connections. The helicopters can fly if the visibility is 1500m, while the Twin Otter can fly if the visibility is 5000m as per the Civil Aviation Rules. The cost of the helicopter is payable directly to our Kathmandu office in the event that this service is utilized. US cash, traveler’s cheque, or credit cards (Visa, MasterCard & American Express only) are accepted. You will be given a receipt upon payment so that you may claim the amount from your travel insurance.

The minimum cost will be US$350 and the maximum US$650 depending on the number of group members. The maximum allowance for checked luggage on these flights is 15kg per person and 5kg for hand luggage. These limits are strictly adhered to so please pack carefully. Please note that approx. 5.5kgs of this weight will be taken up by the sleeping bag (2.5kg), down jacket (1.5kg), kit bag (1kg), and sleeping bag liner (0.5kg) that you are provided.

EXTRA COSTS:

Our Everest base camp trek packages are all-inclusive but we advise that you budget between $400 and $500 for additional expenses on your trek including tips. We also suggest you plan on having extra money available in cash or on a credit card in case you require to book a helicopter in the event your flight is canceled.

Unforeseen cost due to flight cancellation, weather conditions, etc. You are responsible for extra hotel nights and meals in Kathmandu or Lukla that are a result of flight delays.

Nepal entry visa ($40 USD).

Meals:

All the meals are included on the trek however we only include breakfast while you are in the city. you can budget $10-15 per day for lunch and dinner in Kathmandu.

Gratuities:

Tipping is always appreciated and should be based totally on your satisfaction. Although it may not be customary to you, it is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your trips.

Wifi, Batteries Charging, and hot Shower are also not included in the trek package. Wifi is available in some teahouses for $3 to $5 an hour. Hot Showers are also available in a few of the teahouses for between $4 and $6. You can also charge your electronic devices in the lodges and charging costs between $1 and $3 an hour.

The importance of Everest Base Camp Insurance

Travel insurance is necessary for any trip but is mainly important when undertaking activities such as high-altitude trekking in remote regions where medical facilities or assistance may not be close at hand. You’ll enjoy your adventure better with the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have the right insurance cover in place should a mishap occur.

This can be anything from medical emergencies, trip cancellation, trip interruption, delays, lost or stolen luggage to a full helicopter rescue of a mountain. For the Everest base camp trek, you need to confirm that your travel insurance covers Helicopter Rescue with a height limit of no less than 5,5000m. Most standard policies provide cover for walking up to a maximum of 2,500 meters.

The Nepal Trekking Activity Pack add-on extends cover to include trekking between 4,600m and up to 7,000m within Nepal and also includes all activities in the Extreme Activity and Activity packs.

Everest Base Camp Trek Altitude Sickness

When we hike above 3500 meters our bodies have to acclimatize to the decreasing amount of oxygen available. To allow our bodies to adjust we have designed our trek's itinerary so that you walk gradually, allowing acclimatization to occur. However, during the acclimatization process, You may experience some of the following symptoms.

  1. Tiredness
  2. Minor Headache
  3. Troubled sleep
  4. Loss of appetite/nausea
  5. Shortness of breath
  6. Cough
  7. Palpitation
  8. Swelling of the hands and face

Each Person acclimatizes at different rates. Our best suggestion is to take your time and drink plenty of water. These symptoms may not indicate the onset of A.M.S. and if you experience them it does not necessarily mean that you should not continue. All our Sherpa guides have extensive first aid training and we urge you to talk with the Sherpa guide at all times should you believe you have any symptoms in order that we can efficiently monitor your symptoms. The only cure for Acute Mountain Sickness is to descend. Please note that your guide has ultimate responsibility and may ask you to descend if symptoms persist.

Additional info:

As you pack for Everest Base Camp, remember that your gear will be separated into two packs: your daypack that you will carry each day as you trek, and your duffle bag which will be carried between tea houses by porters. All extra baggage (non- trekking items) can be stored at the hotel before you start your trek. We provide you with a free duffel bag in Kathmandu. You can use it to pack your essential trekking equipment. We provide one-porter services for two people. Porters will carry up to 25 kg - 30 Kg or 55-66 pounds of your personal items. This must include your sleeping bag and down jackets. Therefore your duffel bag should not weigh more than 12 kg-15 kg or 26 pounds to 33 pounds.

INSIDE YOUR DAYPACKS:

Daypacks can be any size for hiking, but we always recommend the smaller, the better. Around the 25l to 30l size is good for the EBC trek. You need to carry your own backpack (with waterproof cover) where you can carry your daily needed items in your own backpack. For instance: Water bottle, Extra money for drinks, souvenirs & tips, sunhat, camera, important documents, toiletries, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, rain gear, music (iPhone), etc.

If you don’t have your own down jacket & sleeping bag, don’t worry. We will provide you 4 season sleeping bags and a good down jacket with a hood for complementary use. Good quality sleeping bag and down jacket are most important for high altitude trek.
