With the Annapurna region developing roads in certain areas, the laws of nature seem to be giving way to unnecessary modern needs for the development of commerce and trade in a region known for bio-diversified beauty, and with this changing by the weeks, backpackers who love trekking in Nepal are now seeking untouched and virgin routes in this magnificent area; and the ‘Khopra danda Excursion – Khopra Ridge Trek’’ is just the solution for a thrilling holiday that runs straight off-track onto a rough route called the ‘Yak trail’’, creating a sublime avenue for those who seek a tryst with the gods of nature…

This is a trip that sanctifies Mother Nature in an exceptional way, the fantastic trek steers itself into unknown territory and is said to be an exclusive outing for those looking for something lesser known. Trekkers on this route tend to meet less people [fellow trekkers] and it’s only you, the mountains, and those merry birds to keep us company all the way. We get what we want on this trail, sublime vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and the warm village folks we meet up on the way. And during spring time the trail is blessed with lovely flowers and the rhododendron trees stir our romantic emotions as we get our cameras ready for some great picture options to put up in our ballrooms when we get back home…

This particular area is a base for two big-time festivals in Khayer Lake held annually each year. The local folks group together on the higher elevations of the ridge once in March and April with a break to continue in July and August. Whenever the festival is celebrated the villagers take blood from a yak and drink it while it is still warm! The superstition goes that this will heal any disease. This time around the village people tend to believe that whatever they pray for will be granted: this includes good wives and the women folks hope for bearing children. The outstanding landscapes hereabouts display before us scenery ranging from the rich finery of the Pokhara Valley and its excellent views of Annapurna massif including the towering peaks of Machhapuchare [Fish Tail mountain] as we hike into marvelous rhododendron, hemlock and fir forest through the high alpine ridges of Khopra; Another wonderful addition is the sacred Khayer Lake, which requires a little stroll away from the Khopra Ridge. The ‘Khopra Danda Excursion – Khopra Ridge Trek’’ is just what we need to get away from those contemporary stressful situations we all experience sometime in life…

Itinerary Print Itinerary

If it’s a clear day when you are flying into Kathmandu, then your tour begins right from the skies itself. The sights from the windows of our jet shows us glimmering snow-capped mountain peaks spread out down below us, giving us the first thrills of our just begun vacation, sparking off a whole reaction of unforgettable experiences that stay with us for some time to come. As soon as your plane hits the tarmac of Tribhuwan International Airport, Mountain Sherpa Trekking office representative and driver will be on standby to meet and greet you at the airport and escort you to your hotel. The rep will help you check into your designated hotel, and after going to our rooms and refreshing ourselves we will be briefed about our daily activities. The rest of your time is free to move around the neighborhood and get familiar with your surroundings. In the evening we will meet our senior trek guide who will brief the group about details related to our trek. Your first overnight in the ancient city of temples, probably the most in the world. Breakfast

After a good night’s sleep and enjoying a hearty b/fast, we proceed for our tour of Basantapur Durbar Square. Recorded by UNESCO as a cultural World Heritage site, Kathmandu Durbar Square is a bunch of medieval temples, palaces, courtyards and streets that date back to the 12th and 18th centuries. within this square we will find Hanumandhoka Palace Museum, Taleju Temple, Kumari Ghar (House of the Living Goddess), Kasthamandap and other temples and buildings as old as the city itself; from here we head for a tour of the famous Boudhanath Stupa {said to be the largest in the world) and a major centre of Tibetan culture in Kathmandu. The stupa is designed to be like a giant mandala (a representation of the Buddhist cosmos). We next drive down to Swayambhunath {popularly known as Monkey Temple} “Swayambhu” means “self-created” and refers to the myth that the hill sprung up suddenly from a great lake that once covered Kathmandu Valley. Our next destination is Pashupatinath Temple. This temple is dedicated to Hindu deity Lord Shiva and is said to be the most holy Hindu shrine in Nepal. Hereabouts we see a cremation ritual of Hindus at ‘Aryaghat’, the cremation area of the temple. This cremation site is used for the once royal family of Nepal and also for the simple Nepalese people who live within the country We then wrap up our Heritage tour with a trip to Patan which is one of the three medieval cities in Kathmandu and a destination for connoisseurs of great arts. We take a tour of the Patan Durbar Square - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in the square is the Patan Museum (originally a Malla palace), Krishna Mandir- a stone temple of Lord Krishna with its 21 spires and art that displays scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana epics, this includes the Royal Bath or 'Tushahity' and the nearby Hindu and Buddhist temples. We return back to our hotel, refresh, and head down to thamel area and in the evening explore around local market in Kathmandu. Breakfast

After breakfast, we will pick you up from the hotel and drop off to the domestic airport for a short but very picturesque flight to Pokhara. We can catch amazing views of the Himalayas from the right side of our airplane. Pokhara is the beautiful lake city and we are rewarded with magnificent views of the Himalayas including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhare, the five peaks of Annapurna and others.

We meet our Sherpa crew at Pokhara Airport then you will transfer to Kimche by Private Jeep. Which is about 2:30 hours drive from Pokhara, from where we'll begins the first steps of our trek.

Our trek begins as the trail ascends slightly through forests to Ghandruk, a bustling village of the ethnic Gurung community who has their own dialect, culture, dress and traditions. Ghandruk is also home to many Gurkha soldiers. It is a well known destination for trekkers as it is known for its beautiful mountain views and also because it's just a stone’s throw from Pokhara and Kathmandu. The afternoon is ours to visit the Annapurna Conservation Office, museums and explore the interesting village. Overnight stay at Private Lodge – B. L. D

We first descend further along the trail showcasing rich rhododendron forests, splendidly cascading sparkling mountain streams and other magical vistas of nature that surprise us. After continuously climbing for 3 hours, we step on the territory of Tadapani at an altitude of 2590m. Tadapani offers the most awesome mountain views of the overpowering peaks of Annapurna South. We then crash out for the night at our lodge – B. L. D

Our walk is on the gradual path for sometime through lush rain forest, after several hours of healthy hiking we come to a small clearing; we might stop here for lunch depending on the time. After a stop here, our walk continues to a slow climb for an hour through the rhododendron and pine wood, coming to an open large pasture with a strong wooden Shepard’s shade, from here our route diverts east with a short climb to a ridge through the short rhododendron bushes, from the ridge few minutes of descend brings us to a small path above the cliff side, this almost level path for 5-10 minutes could be risky walking in snow and hail-storm, which may occur sometimes, however this small section has to be undertaken cautiously. After reaching the other side of the ridge near the boulders, our hike goes on a downhill slope overlooking terrific views of the surrounding landscapes, Annapurna range including the most amazing peak of Machhapuchare and Dhaulagiri range to the west. From here a gradual climb of less than two hours brings us to our overnight camp at Dobato, which is a cowherd spot full of scattered temporary built huts in the middle of rhododendron and magnolia forest with excellent close-up views of Annapurna mountains and as far as to Manaslu range to the east. We stay overnight at private Lodge – B. L. D

From dobato in the morning we steep up to great view point Mulde (Muldai 3600m). from mulde you can see altogether 25 mountains such as Annapurna range, Dhaulagiri range, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal range etc. after spent few time, we trek back for tea break & proceed to trek bayali 3400m. we overnight stay at bayali community Lodge- B,L,D

After breakfast, we descend through clear ground and fine-looking forest to reach the pastures of Chistibung. After this, we ascend gradually through a forest before reaching Upper Chistibung which is a temporary herder’s settlement. If you are able to identify it, you might be fortunate to catch sight of the colorful Lophophorus (Danphe), the national bird of Nepal, as well as Himalayan Thar on the grassy ridge high above the trail. Overnight in Chistibung in our tented camps – B. L. D

After a warm hearty breakfast, we set out on a steady climb above the tree line through alpine meadows and pastures to reach Khopra. On nearing the Khopra Ridge, we see the tip of Annapurna South. Upon reaching Khopra we go for a brief hike down Khopra Ridge to a viewpoint overlooking Kali Gandaki river far below in this deep valley. From Khopra we also approve of the stunning mountain panorama including Mt. Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and Annapurna South. We Overnight at nice Stone House of Community Lodge– B. L. D

Today we embark on a  journey to nice stone plate areas from where we attain excellent views of the Fang and surrounding mountains.

For those who want to walk further from the nice stone plate areas or visit sacred lake from Khopra can also be arranged.

 Overnight in Khopra  Ridge. (B,L,D).

From Khopra Ridge we descend off the hillock and hike coolly downhill on a steep trail. Along the route we get more views of Mount Dhaulagiri with the towering peak providing a glorious backdrop to the terraced lush green fields and traditional houses in the villages scattered close by. Overnight in pauda village in private Lodge – B. L. D

We trek about 3-4 hrs today. Once we reach tatopnai, we visit hot spring. Going down to Hot Spring takes about 15 minutes and coming back to the hotel would take 20 to 30 minutes, maximum. The trail condition is well maintained and clear in the peaceful forest with beautiful sounds of birds and river! The hot spring is located at the shore of Modi River and, while bathing, a very good atmosphere may be enjoyed, as you are sit in the hot pool whilst refreshing with the cool air coming from the river! There are two big pools and a fountain to take showers in. The entry fee to the hot spring is NPR, 50/- per person.

After having delicious breakfast, we drive from Tatopani to Pokhara vai Beni. It takes about 5-6hrs by private vehicles. Once we arrive at Pokhra. We check into our hotel, refresh, have some tea and snacks and head out for a guided tour of Barahi temple, David’s fall and some lovely boating on the Fewa Lake. We then get back to our hotel and simply chill out.

In the Evening, You can invite a welfare dinner to your supporting team (guide and porter) and give TIPS directly. Overnight stay at Hotel (B, L)

After breakfast, we get into our vehicle for short drive to Airport & fly back to Kathmandu. Make sure your video cams are loaded for some great pictures from the windows of your plane of the fantastic landscapes & Himalayas. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel. There is nothing much else to do accept to shoot off some emails to your loved ones and companions you met on the course of your holiday, and yes, you’d want to organize those lovely photos. You can spend the evening laid-back at your pace, perhaps catch up on some last minute shopping and celebrate a complimentary dinner together in the evening with the Mountain Sherpa trekking staff. Overnight at your hotel in Kathmandu – Breakfast

After b/fast, our rep and office vehicle will be on standby at our hotel to transfer us to the airport for our connecting flight home. Serving you was a wonderful joy and pleasure, we at Mountain Sherpa Trekking will cherish the bonds of our relationship created over the time you spent with us and we thank you for choosing us as your travel partner and for visiting this amazing country Nepal. We did Khopra dada trek with local tour operator Mountain Sherpa trekking and expeditions. Our guide Lal took great care of us, making us stop and catch our breath every few minutes, and making fun every time. Lal was a perfect guide for Khopra trek. His experience is inspiring!

As we would catch our breathing we would see the other cheaper group trek guides hurrying the other tourists, something that will absolutely make this hike almost impossible, so Lal’s patience was important!

The Khopra dada trek itinerary designed by MST was perfect. We are so happy with mountain Sherpa Trekking Service & highly recommend this company!!

Drinking Water during Khopra dada Trek

For many of us, the perfect choice may be to go for the mineral water. After all, it’s sealed and safe to drink, plus it provides an income for the local traders – right? Regrettably, things are never quite that simple. Mineral water produces a vast number of knock-on problems for mountain societies.

While it does provide an income to local people it also generates an extraordinary, heart-breaking amount of waste and spoiling. Most places simply do not have the resources to do anything with the empty plastic bottles – and they burn them, releasing toxic gases into the air, or leave them in piles just out of sight of travellers, where they take more than 450 years to decompose.

Take, for example, Khopra danda Trek.

The recommended amount of water intake on a high altitude trek like this is 3-4 litters a day. The trek is 9 days long.

That’s more than approximately 30 litters and 30 plastic bottles, which won’t decompose until the year 2466 – per person.

For a full MST group of 12 people, just one trip will result in more than 360 mineral water bottles. And the salt in the wound is that plastic doesn’t decompose at high altitudes, so those 360 or more bottles will be up there forever. But what can you do? You have to drink, so how can you get around the problem?

The Alternatives: The great news is that there are really various options that will help you out of the bottled water trap. Here are just four of the best. All you have to do is pick which one is right for you.

Striped- Steripen is the most trusted model on the market. This technique uses exactly the same process as most mineral water undergoes before it is bottled. It’s UV filtering, exactly the same treatment as the majority of bottled water undergoes to be purified, but on the go. The technology has been around for much longer than you think, but it’s only recently been competitively priced enough to be on the market. SteriPen is an American company; other UV filters are also available.

Boiled water– This isn’t always an option if you’re out and about, but boiled water is an excellent option for safe drinking water on trek. Boiling the water kills any nastiness lurking there. It is the safest and most convenient option. Most lodges serve it, and it is great to ward off the cold. Prices range anywhere between NPR 50 and 120 per liters. Which means, the cost of drinking water will be around $40-$50 for 10 days Khopra trek. Please note that 3-4 liters of fully boiled drinkable water is provided daily. Book our all inclusive Khopra danda trek package for safe and hassle free service. There is no hidden cost.

Purification tablets– Water refining tablets or chemicals like chlorine dioxide are other frequently used. They are easy to carry and cheap to buy. However, they are not as effective as UV filters or boiled water and need a few hours to act. Besides these, LifeStraw and iodine-based treatments are also available but have their drawbacks.

Airport Pickup by Private Vehicle:

We always provide timely airport pickup service, which is most important for hassle free traval.your guide & driver will meet you at the arrivals hall, after you pick up your luggage and head to the exit. (Provide us your correct international flight details). Please meet our Guide and driver who will be waiting outside the Kathmandu international airport terminal. Our Guide will be holding a welcome banner with your name and our company name Mountain Sherpa Trekking & Expedition at the Kathmandu international airport. They will take you to your hotel in a vehicle arranged by us. By booking your trip with us, you get a safe and comfortable ride without stress and inconvenience.

Kathmnadu-Pokhara-Kathmandu Flight:

Our Khopra danda trek includes both way scenic flight from Kathmnadu-Pokhara and Pokhara-Kathmandu. Pokhara may not seem far from Nepal capital city Kathmandu (the cities are only 126 miles / 204 km apart), but the Nepali landscape and road quality make for a very long drive. That's why we recommend our clients opt to fly instead of long drive.

Flying is by far the fastest and most comfortable way of traveling between Kathmandu and Pokhara and highly suggested if you're short on time and looking for comfortable journey. There are severals flights leave each day from the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan Airport and take only around 25 minutes. It's a very scenic flight, particularly if you sit on the right-hand side of the plane, so you can see the Himalaya. When flying, you're likely to arrive feeling enthusiastic and with plenty of time for activities the same day, which can't really be said if you make the trip overland.

Naturally Pokhara. The charming city has numerous beautiful lakes and offers stunning panoramic views of the Fishtail Mountain flanked by the Majestic Himalayas. Pokhara is a amazing place for natural beauty at an altitude of 827 meter from the sea level and 200 km west of Kathmandu. It is also one of the most popular tourist destinations of the country.

The Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu ranges, each with peaks over 8,000 m, can be seen from Pokhara and there are lakes, caves and an impressive falls (Patale Chhango or Devi's Fall) where the water from the Phewa Lake thunders into a hole and disappears. These are some of the pokhras heritage sites as well

As there are many lakes in this beautiful city, Pokhara is also known as "City of Lakes". Phewa Lake, Begnas lake and Rupa Lake are the most visited lakes of Pokhara. While at Pokhara, you can visit to World Peace pagoda, Sarangkot, Davi's fall, Mahendra Cave and museums. These places will surely help you to reveal a lot about Pokhara.

Pokhara to Khimche By Private Transfer

We meet our Sherpa crew at Pokhara Airport then you will transfer to Khimche by Private Jeep. Which is approximately 2 to hours drive from Pokhara, from where we'll begin the first steps of our trek. From Pokhara, we travel by a private vehicle northwest along the Baglung Rajmarg Road. This scenic drive, which climbs in altitude and is windy in places, transports many trekkers in the Annapurna area to the beginning points of their trek.

Although most of the trekkers began from Nayapul, but we highly advise you to drive up to Khimche and start your first day trek because you won't have pleasure hiking firstly due to dusty roads. We are always committed to offer you the quality private vehicle service for any trips in Nepal. The benefit of taking a private vehicle is that you can ask the driver to stop whenever you like and smaller vehicles tend to be able to move through the traffic a little faster than larger buses. Private vehicles come with their own driver.

Tatopani to Pokhara by Private Jeep

We end our trek in the tatopani which mean hot spring in Nepali. From here you will transfer back to pokhara by private vehicle. It takes approx. 3 hours by private vehicle. We will arrive pokhara by late afternoon. The vehicles being used by mountain Sherpa Trekking during the tour will be fully sanitized before use.

Altitude Sickness:

If you trek to a high altitude without letting your body adjust to the new elevation, you may experience altitude sickness. Symptoms include headache and nausea. If you return to a lower elevation, your symptoms will likely go away without needing treatment. In severe cases, altitude sickness can be life threatening.

When we hike above 8,000 to 12,000 feet above sea level our bodies need to acclimatize to the decreasing amount of the oxygen available. You may have symptoms if you travel to a high altitude without giving your body time to adjust to less oxygen. Even if you’re physically fit, you can still experience altitude sickness.

Mountain Sherpa Annapurna sanctuary trek itinerary is carefully designed to avoid from altitude sickness. Over the years we have come up with the best itinerary to aid in the acclimatization process. Our trek itinerary is fully flexible & can modify on the spot if required.

Remember the trek to Himalaya is not a race. Even those in the best shape will suffer from altitude sickness when they race to the top of the mountain too quickly. Go slowly, it will give your body time to adjust to the mountain. However, during the acclimatization process, you may experience some of the following symptoms.

  1. Tiredness
  2. Minor Headache
  3. Troubled sleep
  4. Loss of appetite/nausea
  5. Shortness of breath
  6. Cough
  7. Palpitation
  8. Swelling of the hands and face

Each Person acclimatizes at different rates. Our best suggestion is to take your time and drink plenty of water. These symptoms may not indicate the onset of A.M.S. and if you experience them it does not necessarily mean that you should not continue. All our Sherpa guides have extensive first aid training and we request you to talk with the Sherpa guide at all times should you believe you have any symptoms in order that we can efficiently monitor your symptoms. The only cure for Acute Mountain Sickness is to descend.

You must remember that this is your holiday and you do not want to stress out about the possibility of getting sick from the mountains. Do everything slowly. Drink lots of water. And enjoy the Himalayas views. If anything does happen and you unfortunately get sick, let your guide know right away –Please note that your guide has ultimate responsibility and may ask you to descend if symptoms persist.

Travel insurance:

Travel insurance is necessary for any trip, but is mainly important when undertaking activities such as high altitude trekking in remote regions where medical facilities or assistance may not be close at hand. You’ll enjoy your adventure better with the peace of mind that comes from knowing you have the right insurance cover in place should a mishap occur. This can be anything from medical emergencies, trip cancellation, trip interruption, delays, lost or stolen luggage to a full helicopter rescue off a mountain.

Obtaining travel insurance before you leave home is strongly recommended. This way, if something happens, and this is rare, you will not be out of pocket a tremendous amount of money. Additional info:

As you pack for Everest Base Camp, remember that your gear will be separated into two packs: your daypack that you will carry each day as you trek, and your duffle bag which will be carried between tea houses by porters. All extra baggage (non- trekking items) can be store at the hotel before you start your trek. We provide you a free duffel bag in Kathmandu. You can use it to pack your essential trekking equipment. We provide one-porter services for two people. Porters will carry up to 25 kg - 30 Kg or 55-66 pound of your personal items. This must include your sleeping bag and down jackets. Therefor your duffel bag should not weigh more than 12 kg-15 kg or 26 pound to 33 pounds.

INSIDE YOUR DAYPACKS:

Daypacks can be any size for hiking, but we always recommend the smaller, the better. Around the 25l to 30l size is good for EBC trek. You need to carry your own backpack (with waterproof cover) where you can carry your daily needed items in your own backpack. For instance: Water bottle, Extra money for drinks, souvenirs & tips, sunhat, camera, important documents, toiletries, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, rain gear, music (iPhone) etc.

If you don’t have your own down jacket & sleeping bag, don’t worry. We will provide you 4 season sleeping bags and good down jacket with a hood for complementary use. Good quality sleeping bag and down jacket are most important for high altitude trek.
