Gorakshep: The Final Stop Before Everest Base Camp

Gorakshep is a small but incredibly important settlement located in the Everest region of Nepal. Situated at an altitude of approximately 5,164 meters (16,942 feet), it is the final village with lodging facilities on the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek route. Although it is modest in size, Gorakshep plays a crucial role for trekkers on their journey to Everest Base Camp. Since there are no lodges or permanent accommodations at the actual base camp, trekkers typically visit Everest Base Camp during the day and then return to Gorakshep to spend the night. This makes Gorakshep the highest overnight stop on the trek.
In addition to its importance as a resting point, Gorakshep also serves as the starting point for the early morning hike to Kala Patthar—one of the most breathtaking and iconic viewpoints in the entire Himalayas. From the summit of Kala Patthar, trekkers are rewarded with a panoramic sunrise view over the towering peaks, including a direct and unobstructed view of Mount Everest, which is often not clearly visible from the base camp itself.
The hike to Kala Patthar is usually done before sunrise, requiring trekkers to start very early in the morning from their lodge in Gorakshep. Although the trail can be challenging due to the high altitude and cold temperatures, the experience is truly unforgettable. Watching the first golden rays of the sun illuminate Everest and its neighboring peaks is a moment that stays with you forever. For many, this is the highlight of the entire trek and is often described as the experience of a lifetime.

Overall, Gorakshep is not just a physical stop along the EBC route—it is a place that marks both an emotional and spiritual high point of the trek, offering a deep sense of accomplishment and awe that few other places on earth can match.

How to Hike Safely up to Gorakshep – Tips for Everest Base Camp Trekkers
If you're planning the Hike to Everest Base Camp , one of the most crucial sections of your journey is the hike from Lobuche to Gorakshep and onward to Everest Base Camp (EBC). This stretch takes you above 5,000 meters (16,400 feet)—where altitude sickness becomes a serious concern.
In this guide, based on our 27+ years of Himalayan trekking experience, we’ll show you how to hike safely to Gorakshep by prioritizing acclimatization, following the right Everest Base Camp itinerary, and understanding the elevation of key points along the trail.

Why Acclimatization Matters at High Altitude

As you ascend into the thin air of the Khumbu region, oxygen levels drop dramatically. After Lobuche (4,910 m / 16,109 ft), the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) increases. AMS can cause symptoms like headaches, nausea, fatigue, and even life-threatening conditions like HAPE or HACE if ignored.

That’s why it’s critical to:

  • Trek slowly
  • Hydrate regularly
  • Take proper rest days
  • Follow a gradual ascent itinerary
