As a trusted Sherpa company, we make sure every trekker is fully prepared for a safe and enjoyable ABC Trekking adventure.

The ABC Trekking, or Annapurna Base Camp Trek, is one of the most beloved journeys in Nepal. Though it’s not overly difficult, careful preparation is essential to ensure a safe and memorable experience. This trek, which can be completed in 7 to 10 days depending on the chosen route, offers breathtaking views and a deep connection to the natural beauty of Nepal.

There are various routes and starting points for the ABC trek, each with its own unique charm. We highly recommend combining your trek with a visit to Ghorepani Poon Hill. Poon Hill is renowned for its stunning sunrise views and offers an awe-inspiring 360-degree panorama of the Annapurna range. Witnessing the sunrise from Poon Hill is a magical experience that will leave you speechless and add an unforgettable highlight to your ABC trek.

Adding Poon Hill to your trek isn’t just an option; it’s an enhancement that transforms your journey into something truly extraordinary. Let us guide you on this remarkable adventure, ensuring every step is filled with wonder and joy.

ABC Trek: Here are the top 17 important tips for preparing.

  1. Book your flight in Advance: Booking your international flight in advance is highly recommended. We suggest booking your flight at least 7-8 months ahead to secure better fares and availability, especially since flights to Nepal during peak season can be more expensive. Therefore, we highly recommend planning ahead and booking early to ensure everything goes smoothly.
  2. Accommodation: For a safe and enjoyable trek, it's essential to choose good accommodations in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, as well as the best lodges along the trek route. In Kathmandu, we highly recommend staying near Thamel, which is the tourist center. Thamel offers many trekking shops, good restaurants, and various attractions to explore and enjoy before and after your trek. In Pokhara, we suggest staying near Lakeside, where you can find numerous restaurants and enjoy the vibrant nightlife. This will enhance your stay in Pokhara at the end of the trek. During the trek, choose lodges with attached bathrooms and hot showers whenever possible. While not all lodges have these amenities, some places do offer them for a more comfortable experience.
  3. Transportation: The ABC trek is located in the western region of Nepal. You need to either fly or drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, and then drive to Tikhedhunga or Khimche to start your trek. Although there is a tourist bus option from Kathmandu to Pokhara, we highly recommend flying. The bus ride takes a minimum of 6-7 hours, while a flight takes only about 25 minutes. By flying to Pokhara, you can drive to the trekking starting point and begin your trek on the same day. At the end of the trek, we also suggest taking a flight back to Kathmandu for convenience.
  4. Well-Designed Itinerary: A well-designed itinerary is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trek. Consult with an expert Sherpa company to create the best itinerary that includes all must-visit places, cultural sites, additional hikes, and acclimatization periods.
  5. Trek with an Expert Sherpa Guide: Sherpas are known for being reliable and honest, and they are the backbone of Nepal’s adventure tourism. Many European and American travelers love trekking with Sherpa guides, who come highly recommended by international adventure enthusiasts. For the best trekking experience and a reliable trekking partner in Nepal, choosing a Sherpa guide is an excellent decision.
  6. Walk Carefully: When trekking along the trail to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), it's crucial to walk carefully, especially on downhill sections. Bringing trekking poles can be very helpful for stability. The trail includes some steep steps and drop-offs, so always watch your footing to avoid accidents. If you come across donkeys or porters, give them space by standing right side of the trail. It's important to follow the instructions of your Sherpa guide closely to ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
  7. Food & Drinks : Adequate foods and drinks are crucial for a successful trek. Eat hygienic food and drink plenty of water to maintain your energy levels and stay hydrated. We suggest drinking at least 2-3 liters of water each day to keep yourself hydrated.
  8. Carry Egergy Bars: It's a good idea to carry extra dry fruits, chocolates, or energy bars with you during the trek to ABC. These foods provide quick energy and are convenient to eat on the trail. You can purchase these items in Kathmandu or Pokhara before starting your trek. This ensures you have enough snacks to keep you energized throughout the journey.
  9. Physical Fitness: Start a fitness regimen at least a few months before your trek. Focus on cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and hiking with a loaded backpack.

  10. Gear Up: Invest in good quality trekking gear, including waterproof hiking boots, a sturdy backpack, trekking poles, and appropriate clothing layers.

  11. Pack Wisely: Pack light but ensure you have all essentials such as warm clothing, a first-aid kit, water purification tablets, and high-energy snacks.

  12. Weather Awareness: Be aware of weather conditions and forecasts. Avoid trekking in severe weather and be prepared for sudden changes.
  13. Always Travel with a Sherpa Guide: Consider trekking with a knowledgeable Sherpa guide who understands the terrain, local conditions, and can provide assistance if needed.
  14. Always walk in Group: When trekking to ABC, stick together as a team. Watch out for each other and maintain a group pace for safety. If someone can't keep up, it's important to let the guides know so they can assist. Teamwork ensures a smoother and safer journey for everyone.
  15. Don't ignore signs of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). Our ABC Trek itinerary includes proper acclimatization. We start with Ghorepani at 2,874 meters (9,429 feet) and hike to Poon Hill at 3,210 meters (10,531 feet), which helps your body adjust before heading to Annapurna Base Camp. It's crucial to communicate how you're feeling to your guide. Altitude sickness is serious; trust your guide's decisions—they're trained to handle it. If you get sick, descending to lower altitudes promptly is the best remedy.
  16. Insurance: It's essential to have travel insurance that covers trekking and medical emergencies, especially in remote areas like the Himalayas.

  17. Emergency Contacts: Carry contact details for local authorities and your embassy. Provide a copy of your insurance and emergency contact information, including your family members' contact details, to your travel company before joining the ABC Trek. This ensures you're prepared for any unforeseen situations during your journey.
